Emma picked up Megan and I on Wednesday night and we headed up to Denver. We stayed with Melissa at the hotel on post so we could be close to the airport for our 7:00am flight. We woke up early, parked our car, shuttled to the airport, and flew 3 hours to Regan National. It was so fun to see Brittany and Heidi when they picked us up. Yay for being reunited with good friends!
We checked into the Ritz Carlton right in Pentagon City, grabbed some lunch and then grabbed the metro to take us into DC. We really lucked out on the beautiful weather. We missed some of the Cherry Blossoms around the Tidal basin, but flowers were blooming everywhere and it was so good to feel the sun. Meanwhile those of us from Colorado were missing a huge snowstorm – which made our 70 degree trip even better.
Once on the Mall we headed for the National Archives to see the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
Walking down Pennsylvania Avenue we spotted a PAUL… a French chain of bakery restaurants established in 1889 in Northern France. We ran to get Lemon Tarts, Macaroons and Chocolat du Pain. Yum.
We continued down Pennsylvania Avenue for a glimpse of the White House.
The National WWII Memorial is really cool. The memorial opened in 2004 and honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the US, the more than 400,000 who died, and all who supported the war effort from home.
From the WWII Memorial we walked down the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to the Lincoln Memorial.
Being back in Washington DC was so fun. My last trip to DC was 10 years ago. Baby Megan and I visited Chris during a 4 week Conference. You can’t help but feel patriotic while you are walking around these amazing Memorials downtown.
Walking through the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, past the Washington Monument and over to catch our Metro back to the hotel. We ended the night with pizzas, salads at California Pizza Kitchen and hours of talking before we finally went to bed. Good to be together!!
