The Scarecrow: Katie, The Lion: Sarah, Dorothy: Elise and the Tin Man: Ariela
When Sis. Russell asked if there were any girls who were interested in planning and putting together our New Beginnings program as one their Value Projects… 13 girls raised their hands. Almost every one of my Beehives. In class we decided to draw names out of a hat and came up with four girls. Sister A and I met with these cuties several times to divide responsibilities and guide them along but honestly they did most of the work themselves and boy did it turn out great. It was a fun event and they got so many compliments on a creative job well done.
Katie’s good friend, Elise wrote the skit and it was cute, creative and funny. The girls had fun getting together to practice acting it out. I wish I would have taken a video of it!
Characters: Dorothy – who gets handed a basket full of young women items suddenly finds herself having to follow the Yellow Brick Road to make it back home. She first runs into the Lion who helps Dorothy with Courage and Purpose and explains a few things in her basket… the YW theme, the YW age groups and class posters, the motto and logo, and puts a YW necklace around Dorothy’s neck. Next she runs into the Scarecrow who helps her learn about Knowledge and explains the Personal Progress Program and how it helps YW Come Unto Christ. Next she runs into the Tin Man who teaches Dorothy about Love and introduces her to the Incoming Beehives… (All of the characters hand the ‘Munchkins’ giant lollipops as they come to the front while being introduced by the Tin Man. It was especially fun that Emily was one of the incoming Beehives!! Can’t believe that. She is pretty excited but has to wait another 11 months! ). Dorothy continues on the yellow brick road which brings her around the back and straight up the middle where the Bishop is standing. “Bishop is that you? I’m home!” Then the Bishop spoke about COMING HOME. It was SO GOOD! To end off the night some of the girls sang COME UNTO CHRIST which was absolutely fantastic and really brought the spirit.
The decorations mostly consisted of a giant yellow brick road which we taped down the night before… and a desert table full of a rainbow of fruit and angel food cake.
