After getting off the ferry and back on the mainland, we drove 3 1/2 hours to Lansing. We were able to drive around the city a little bit and find Chris and Adam’s mission, home, their mission office where they were both AP’s together, and their apartment. It was so fun to listen to them reminisce and tell stories that were flooding back to their memory as we drove through the streets of Lansing. We had a birthday dinner for Adam at a cool pizza place and then went to a movie. Fun day.
Written by Chris: “On Saturday, we woke up at our hotel in Lansing and Adam and I went golfing for the third time of the week. We played at a course called Eagle Eye. It was very nice, but it was a bit cold and windy that day. And it was a very hard course so very challenging golf in those conditions. But it was so fun. I didn't play as well as normal this week, but still so fun. We got back from golf, took a quick shower to thaw out, and then headed on to campus for the game. I served for 5 months on the Michigan State University campus so it was very surreal to be back there walking around the campus where I spent so much time. It is a beautiful campus, especially this time of year with the fall colors.”
Written by Chris: “This was a big game. Michigan State won the Big 10 Championship last year and went to the College Football playoffs (only the best 4 teams in the country go to the playoff) so this looked like our hardest game of the season for sure. The Stadium is big, bigger than BYU. It seats 75,000 people and it was a great atmosphere. They were all dressed in their green color and they were loud and proud. However, the BYU team eventually quieted them right down. The first half was a defensive struggle. They scored a touchdown the first time they got the ball and it looked pretty easy for them and we were kind of worried, but the defense made some adjustments and shut them down the rest of the game. Our offense was moving the ball but couldn't score in the first half. We went for a first down twice on fourth down instead of kicking a field goal (once at the 3 yard line) and got stopped both times with no points to show for it. Then we finally kicked a field goal as the first half expired to go into halftime losing 7-3. We had free tickets from Rhett Almond (the kicker who made those points) because he is neighbors with the Christoffersons) so we were cheering loud for him since we were using his family tickets.
The second half we stopped them on defense and our offense did fantastic. We scored a touchdown every time they got the ball. Jamaal Williams was once again our star as he ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Taysom played a great game with some important third down throws and runs. It was incredible to watch. Our seats were so good really close to the field, surrounded by the players families, right in front of the cheerleaders the whole time since we were the main BYU section. It was awesome. The MSU crowd got pretty deflated while we took over the game and we just got louder and louder. I lost my voice again by the end.”
I guess we were on TV a ton. It was on national TV on ABC and every time they would show our crowd, we were in the middle of it. We got a ton of texts from friends telling us they saw us on TV. We were also on the ESPN highlights on sports center. That was fun too. It was a perfect cap to our incredible week together.
Towards the middle of the fourth quarter, when it was clear BYU was going to win, Michigan State fans started to leave and BYU fans poured down the bleachers to fill in the empty spots… and we were quite the crowd. We applauded the win with LOUD unified cheers, and high fives with the plays but the finale was hearing the BYU players sing the Cougar Fight song to the fans! It was awesome!!
We ate dinner at Champs that night and then watched some other football games at the hotel while going to bed.
Written by Chris: “Sunday we went to church at 11:00 only to find out it was Stake Conference and it started at 10:00. We visited the Mission office, the Mission home, and our apartment and the institute building on Friday and Sunday and got some pictures there. So awesome but weird to be visiting all these places. So many memories came rushing back and Adam and I were just throwing out stories the whole time. I spent 5 months there as an AP, so it was my second longest area, and my favorite area. I had such a good time there and it was so wonderful to be back.”
