We’ve known that the last Ward Meeting for the Heidelberg Ward would be June 9th for quite a few months. Chris had been talking with President Adams for several months on how to ‘close a ward’. Chris is sure his name will be black listed for being a Bishop who has closed a ward. It definitely was a unique situation. President Adams released Chris as Bishop, released those members of the ward that were serving in Stake Callings and then did a blanket releasing on the rest of the ward. I cried, not surprisingly. It was been truly wonderful serving within this ward and Stake. The world is full of good people and we sure met some here.
There were quite a few people there. Several ‘old ward members’ returned from nearby wards to attend for Heidelberg’s last meeting. It was nice to have a full Chapel again.
The Seminary kids each took a minute to talk about one of the Scripture Mastery Scriptures. Ryan and Mose gave a short talk and did a great job. Chris spoke and then President Tillet spoke. It was a great meeting.
We only had Sacrament Meeting and then went straight into the cultural hall for our last ‘Linger Longer’. After eating and talking we headed out to the parking lot and talked and talked and talked some more… not wanting to leave. It’s different when one family moves out or when you leave a ward behind… but literally having a last meeting, and saying goodbye to everyone knowing that we are all heading our separate ways, is quite a unique experience. As each family got in their cars and left, the remainder of us stood on either side and waved. We stayed until the end… which was about 6:30pm.
I’ll always have fond memories of that Ward and that Ward building.
4 former Bishops of the Heidelberg Ward… Chris, Brother Duncan – who went on to be the Stake Patriarch, President Allred – who was just released as our Stake President, and President Tillett, who was just called into the new Stake Presidency making Chris the Bishop. Amazing that they were all here for the last meeting together.
