One morning early in the week we spent a morning at the Documentation Center and Bunkers. The Documentation Center was built upon the remains of what was the second seat of Nazi administration. I spent my time explaining Hitler and the horrors of Nazism to Emily and Megan, who indeed were horrified… it’s not the first time these past couple of years that we’ve talked about Hitler in our travels but they seemed to be at an age to understand some more things this time. The most interesting section of the Documentation center was a 30 movie with English subtitles about Hitler’s rise and how much of a ‘rock star’ the people viewed him as. It was really fascinating and the 30+ kids in our group watched it amazingly well.
After that we headed down stairs into the vast bunker system. “Construction began in 1943, after the Battle of Stalingrad ended the Nazi aura of invincibility. This is an incredibly engineered underground town with meeting rooms, offices, archives for the government, and lavish living quarters for Hitler – all connected by four miles of tunnels cut by slave labor through solid rock. It was stripped bare after the war. Today, you can wander among the concrete and marvel at megalomania gone mad.”
