The Hohenzollern Castle

Castle

Coming home from the Black Forest we jetted out of the way a bit to visit this castle.  This was our last outing with Grandma and Grandpa since they were to fly home the next day – and likely their last trip to Germany so we wanted to end with a good one.  One of my good friends told me it was her favorite castle – and it was indeed great.  So neat to be able to see the castle in the distance.  Even twenty minutes away we could see it sitting atop the mountain.

Grandma, Grandpa and Matthew took the shuttle from the parking lot to top of the mountain.  The rest of us decided to hike it – boy, was it steep!  Matthew would NOT have made it.  He’s such a complainer about walking these days.  He was happy to play with Grandma’s iPhone and wait for us to arrive.  Once at the top we had fun checking out the views in every direction.

We checked out the two castle churches before our German castle tour started.  I think this picture of Mary and Jesus is the most beautiful one I’ve seen in Europe.  It’s so different from the way these two are typically painted.  They are both standing, for one thing. I love it!

At the beginning of our tour the guide made sure our little kids were treated like royalty.  They got to wear royal capes for the duration.  No photos allowed in the castle but it was ornately decorated and furnished.  Very beautiful with amazing views of the countryside at each window.  We had to put big slippers on overtop of our shoes to protect the old floors.

We sat in this cute little courtyard and ordered some brats and fries for lunch/dinner.

So fun to have you visit us, Grandma and Grandpa!

Funny picture of Luke....what a cutie. That castle is awesome!! Maybe we could go there too? I looked up where it is and it could be doable, maybe on the way to Garmish? Anyway, it looks amazing.
